Largest unroaded area south of 52 degrees latitude.

South and west of the Tatlayoko Field Station site is an expansive and unroaded mountain wilderness unlike anything else in western Canada. This pristine wilderness, estimated to be at least 3.2 million hectares (8 million acres) in size, includes the Charlotte Alplands, the Pantheon Range, Waddington Range, Niut Range, Homathko Icefield, and the Chilcotin Ranges. These mountain ranges are penetrated by fingers of coastal temperate rainforest extending up the Homathko, Klinaklini, and Southgate river valleys.

This area is significantly larger than the largest roadless areas in the southern 48 U.S. states, and larger than any roadless area in western Canada south of 52 degrees latitude.
